Reduction of wrinkles by neuromodulators (Botox, Xeomin)

Many individuals are unaware of the difference between the botulinum toxin and Dermal fillers. Botulinum toxin does not add volume to the injected area, unlike Dermal fillers. In fact, with botulinum toxin, it is the muscles that are injected to relax them. This allows for a more rested face and prevents expression lines from becoming permanent. Botulinum toxin is, therefore, a fabulous PREVENTION tool. In fact, its prolonged use allows the skin over the injected muscles not to be subjected to repeated contractions and to avoid becoming marked by expression lines.

Botulinum toxin is mainly used to treat :

  • Glabella wrinkles (between the eyebrows)
  • Horizontal wrinkles of the forehead
  • Crow's feet (eye contour)
  • Orange peel skin on the chin
  • Nose wrinkles ("bunny lines")
  • Vertical wrinkles around the mouth ("smoker's wrinkles")
  • Aging necks
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) in the forehead, hands, feet and armpits.

For already initiated patients, treatment with Botox or Xéomin takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The session begins with the taking of photos. Botulinum toxin is then injected with fine needles with minimal discomfort. Little time is required to inject the targeted muscles. Even patients who are not comfortable with the injections usually tolerate the treatment very well.

The effect of the botulinum toxin is apparent between 3 and 7 days and is fully visible after 10 days. Its effect will diminish after 3 to 4 months. However, patient satisfaction may last longer, from 6 to 8 months, because the muscles remain less prominent. In fact, the more this medication is used, the longer its effect tends to last. Indeed, the muscle loses the habit of contracting and atrophies, thus becoming easier and easier to immobilize. When treatments are stopped, the expression lines on your face will return to the appearance they had when you started. In fact, your wrinkles will have stopped progressing during your period of use of the medication, which is why preventive virtues are attributed to this medication.

Botulinum toxin is very safe when administered by a trained professional. The safety of this drug has been widely proven, as it has been used for many years to treat medical conditions such as headaches, bruxism, dystonias, cerebral palsy...

The side effects of botulinum toxin are rare, temporary and completely reversible. Some people will complain of headaches after the injection. This is due to the injection of a liquid into their muscles. Headaches, if they occur, usually last only a few hours. The opposite is also possible; some people will have an almost immediate feeling of muscle relaxation and will feel a decrease in their frontal pressure. This is due to the rest of the injected muscles. On another hand, the injected areas may present redness and a small bump similar to mosquito bites, which fades away in a few hours. In rare cases, there may also be bruising.

Following treatment, patients can immediately return to their daily activities. Injection sites, if slightly visible, are easily camouflaged with make-up. It is recommended to avoid rubbing or pressing on the treated areas for 4 hours. In addition, prolonged bending for 4 hours should also be avoided to prevent the injected medication from moving to other muscle groups.
