Lips: A Wide Range of Options

Les lèvres: Recette pour les 20 à 80 ans

Finding the right balance between injections and natural results is an art!

The topic of lip enhancement requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond simply adding volume with fillers. The lower face intricately connects the lips, mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and cheeks, which means that it must be analyzed in relation to the entire face and even the body as a whole.

So, before considering fillers to obtain fuller lips, it’s necessary to evaluate the signs of aging in this area and even in the entire face. It’s therefore important to have an overall view in order to achieve harmonious results.

In addition, lip fillers can’t significantly alter the physical structure of the mouth and the width of the mucous membranes. It’s therefore unrealistic to assume that lips that have been thin since birth can be transformed into full and generous lips, even with 10 injections of filler!

Therefore, the most important advice I can give you is to keep an open mind during your consultation.

Here are a few scenarios to help you choose your options:

  • Women who already have beautiful lips and show little or no signs of aging may benefit from injections alone. It’s also possible to combine fillers with other measures to increase the “opening” of the lips and make them look very natural from the front and the side.

  • Women who show little or no signs of aging, have naturally thin lips and a narrow smile must realize that injections alone won’t “lift” the lip. They can increase the thickness of the lips but not their width. We can intervene and increase lip separation. Surgery to cut and shorten the skin under the nose isn’t the only option. However, these patients will probably need to change their expectations.

  • Women who used to have fuller lips and notice that they’re getting thinner with age can also get lip injections. However, it’s important to consider all aspects in order to maintain facial harmony. Depending on the degree of aging, we’ll expand our scope of action to include the lower part of the face.

  • Finally, women who only want to inject the skin above the upper lip to reduce dynamic or static wrinkles should also receive advice. Although fillers can reduce wrinkles, they do have limitations. They don’t mask dynamic wrinkles that well and require the addition of botulinum toxin in small doses. This, however, is a temporary solution that is sometimes poorly tolerated around the mouth. For static perioral wrinkles, an overall approach is required depending on how deep they are and whether they’re accompanied by significant signs of aging.
So, there’s a lot of potential when it comes to lips, and treatments can deliver amazing results! It’s just a matter of finding the right approach. The lips are as complex as dark circles. To be successful, you often need to shorten the tissue. I’ll explain this in more detail during your consultation! Dr. Laflamme
